AROC Goodwood and Sussex Coast sections - cruise around Chicester Harbour
Gwen & Peter Warr joined the AROC Goodwood and Sussex Coast sections on their joint cruise around Chichester harbour on June 24th and kindly provided this report for the website:
In spite of slight glitch in the circulation of joining instructions we located a couple of likely looking Alfas including a stunning black GT in the West Itchenor car park at about 6pm and eventually became part of a crowd of 25 or so anticipating an exclusive AROC cruise around the huge Chichester harbour. The weather was sublime and I understand the local groups had billed the event as 'probably of interest to wives as well...' so it was a mixed bunch that embarked soon after low tide. The upstream option towards Bosham was not available due to the tide so we chugged in a leiseurly fashion towards the sea enjoying the sun, wildlife, passing gin palaces and the sheer peace of it all. Our skipper provided some informative commentary and her crewmate served the drinks and snacks - alas no smoked salmon due to insufficient prior uptake. We passed boatyards, evidence of 19th century land reclamation, moored boats from as far as Holland and eventually close to the West Wittering beach from where the Isle of Wight and the Portsmouth skyline were visible. After turning, the throttles were cut back and we glided even more peacefully homewards on the incoming tide. Good conversation was punctuated by simple basking in the sun and all too soon we were back at the jetty. Some of the party had booked a meal at The Ship Inn just up the road but we decided to get underway and found a good Italian restaurant in Arundel. Thanks, Sue, at Goodwood section for arranging the trip and thanks, David, at Sussex Coast for forwarding the invitation. I think Gwen and I will join them again if we get invited... |
